o $35.00 deposit was due September 2nd. If you have not paid this, please send in cash/money order by this Friday, September 16th.

 FUNDRAISER: We will be selling Carolina Girl Apparel Shirts and Butter Braid Bread for this MONTH. All checks need to be written to Calhoun Academy of the Arts. Cash is also accepted. The fundraisers will last for 2 weeks. All money and order forms need to be turned in on Tuesday, September 27th. NO LATE ORDERS ACCEPTED!



You make $4.00 off of each shirt you sale and $5.00 off of each butter braid that you sale. This amount will be subtracted from the $200.00.



 Spending money at the Gift Shop-$20 maximum



Arrival/ Departure-Ms. Cowley

 Everyone needs to be here by 6:00am on Monday, February 6th. Meet in the lobby of the school by your homeroom teacher’s name.

 Arrival on the 8th will be between 5:30pm and 6:00pm. Please be here on time!





Emergency Medical Forms-Mr. Cole

 If your child requires medication, it must be sent in a plastic bag with the dosage and your child’s name clearly marked. Do not send this in until February 6th, but please send in the medicine release form signed with the medical form. (Whether or not your child is taking medicine.)

 Prescription medications must have the child’s name on the bottle in the original container. This must match what is on Part C of the Emergency Medical Form. This includes ANY medication (prescription and OTC)

So as a child, I always wanted to be a teacher. At one point I thought, maybe a nurse, but I knew I had the calling to teach. I was raised to always do my best at everything I did, so I knew once I "officially" decided to become a teacher that I was going to do my job and do it GOOD!!! In college, I concentrated on learning everything I could to be a better teacher from how I could teach certain content areas to really being involved in students' lives. I wanted to be a teacher that students would remember down the road- just like teachers I remember from my childhood- TOO MANY GOOD INFLUENCES to even name in fear of leaving someone out- I am blessed and was blessed to have so many good role models and GREAT educators in my life.

So, with that being said, in college I was introduced to Ron Clark. I had never met him until a couple of years ago and still adopt his methods in my classroom TODAY. His story is amazing if you have never heard it. Anyway, I wanted to provide you with a few things from the Ron Clark Academy so you could see how blessed your students are to be at Calhoun Academy of the Arts. The students at RCA come to school in the middle of a not so nice neighborhood in Atlanta, GA (to say the least.) Their is an application process for rising fifth graders and the school runs 5th-8th grade. Middle school is tough years, and Ron wants to inspire them at that age before it is too late. I try to tell my students all the time of how blessed they are to be able to come to school because so many kids around our world are not so lucky. We really do take our education for granted.

So, with that being said, here are some really good articles and an amazing video I wanted to share with you and WHERE I get some of my INSPIRATION! Thank you RCA for your passion and DRIVE to help students and PARENTS be successful because we are all on the same team!!

On Friday, the students received a piece of paper that was to be given to their parents. On the paper, parents, please tell us where you were on 9/11/2001 and describe your feelings. We will talk about these Monday in class.

The quiz is GRADED and glued in your child's notebook on Tuesday, September 6th. Look over all of the information in the notebook and in Social Studies Book pages 107-111. The test will be THIS FRIDAY, September 9th! Let's see who gets to WEAR the CROWN!

The 13^th, 14^th and 15^th Amendments (Modified)

The 13^th, 14^th and 15^th Amendments to the United States Constitution are sometimes called the “Reconstruction Amendments.”  They were passed in order to abolish slavery and to establish the rights of former slaves.

Thirteenth Amendment: 1865

Section 1.  Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Fourteenth Amendment: 1868

Section 1.  All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction (laws) thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.  No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge (limit) the privileges or immunities (rights) of citizens of the United States; not shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Fifteenth Amendment: 1870

Section 1.  The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

RECONSTRUCTION QUIZ #1

Quiz 1- Wednesday, August 31st

To help your child study for this quiz-- take a look at his/her social studies notebook. This notebook is where we take notes on a daily basis, record information, glue in artifacts, songs, etc. The table of contents at the beginning of the notebook will tell you when we did something and what it is. Read aloud the information and then tell your chlid to tell you the most important facts that you read aloud to them from the notebook. You can even make flash cards with the vocabulary words and play vocabulary games! Make study time fun! Quiz your child in the car on the way and home from school or while you are riding down the road!
