PACKING LIST for BARRIER ISLAND!
Double click on the picture to ENLARGE! Don't forget to bring 2 TRASH BAGS- one for mud pit clothes and 1 for dirty clothes! No more than $20.00 and maybe just a couple of bucks for when we stop at a rest area! No extra money is required though.
Long time, No BLOG!
We are still alive at Calhoun Academy in Mrs. Bracken's Social Studies class!!! We have been so busy since we have been back since Christmas Break. The New Year has started off great, and we have really hit the ground running since MIDDLE SCHOOL is right around the corner. Can you believe it? We just celebrated the 100th day of school, and we only have a couple of months left to get all of the content in before it is time to go to middle school. The students are doing great as they know the pace is pretty quick right now. We have so much to be excited for!!
BARRIER ISLAND- THIS MONDAY! Make sure if you are going that you are at school at 6:00am this MONDAY, February 6th. Make sure you have followed the packing list. We will call or text parents when we arrive, so make sure you provided your child's homeroom teacher with the correct numbers and whether or not you text or not.
If you are not going to Barrier Island, you are still required to come to school for those 3 days. We will be in class while we are there, so you will still have class here at Calhoun.
Remember to check your child's homework/Friday folder DAILY to make sure they are being RESPONSIBLE and keeping up with all of their assignments, tests and quizzes. Also, check parent portal as we update grades weekly. The Assignment Sheet that they bring home every Friday for the next week has all of the Spelling words and info about what we will be doing for that coming week. PLEASE help us out and stay connected with us by reading, helping with homework and returning necessary papers. Thank you so much for your support as we continue to get the FIFTH GRADERS ready for Middle School and LIFE after elementary school! You guys are AWESOME!

Updates- Quiz and Barrier Island Deposit
RECONSTRUCTION QUIZ #1
Quiz 1- Wednesday, August 31st
To help your child study for this quiz-- take a look at his/her social studies notebook. This notebook is where we take notes on a daily basis, record information, glue in artifacts, songs, etc. The table of contents at the beginning of the notebook will tell you when we did something and what it is. Read aloud the information and then tell your chlid to tell you the most important facts that you read aloud to them from the notebook. You can even make flash cards with the vocabulary words and play vocabulary games! Make study time fun! Quiz your child in the car on the way and home from school or while you are riding down the road!

Flower Power Fundraiser
FUNDRAISING TIME HAS BEGUN!

WHAT A PROFIT!!!! For more information, read over the order form, catalog, or ask your child’s homeroom teacher. Thank you for your cooperation and HAPPY SELLING!

Parent Update
August 27, 2010
Attention Parents!!!
First, let us take a second to tell you how wonderful the start to the school year has been. We have enjoyed meeting and getting to know your children even though we don’t know all of you, yet! We were really unsure if this year was going to get started on time, but now we are in full swing.
We have a few things on the agenda for 5th grade and for the school as a whole that we need for you to know. Please take a minute to look over the following:
• Back to School Night – It will happen. We are just not sure when. The crews are finishing up the Library and minor details. We want to unveil our WHOLE school to you on that night. Please be on the lookout for information concerning this.
• Materials Fees – Please hold your materials fee until we ask for it. We must locate all of the receipt books from this summer’s temporary office.
• Signed Papers – Please return the medical, internet, lunch, All-Star, and bus papers if you have not done so already. If you would like to sign up for Parent Portal please do so.
• Barrier Island – The first payment is scheduled for Monday, August 30th. Your child received a sheet with payment dates/amounts and a small envelope for Barrier Island in 4th grade. If you have misplaced your copy, or are new, here are some dates with amounts to help make the $200.00 total easier.
Nonrefundable Deposit $35.00 Monday, August 30th
September Payment $45.00 Monday, September 27th
October Payment $40.00 Monday, October 25th
November Payment $40.00 Monday, November 29th
December Payment $40.00 Monday, December 13th
The first payment is non-refundable and reserves the busses to travel to Barrier Island. We must know early how many students are going so we can get the busses we need. As always, feel free to pay what you can at any other time. The schedule is just a helpful guideline. You may pay the whole $200.00 if you would like. Please make checks payable to Calhoun Academy of the Arts and place “Barrier Island” in the memo line. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.
Thank you for allowing us to teach your child. We hope to make this an awesome year!
