WORLD POWER

WORLD POWER
Written by: Mrs. Bracken and Mrs. O’Neal’s
Fifth Grade Social Studies Classes ’08-09
Calhoun Academy of the Arts
Anderson, SC
Sing to: Independent by Webbie featuring Lil Boosie & Lil Phat

We got Alaska from Russia
only 7.2 million dollars
Seward’s Folly, Natural Resources
fish, lumber, oil, gold, coal, copper

Now we’re annexing Hawaii
Using cash crops to get more money
Yellow journalists told stories
‘Bout the battleship Maine exploding

WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?
WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?

Teddy’s Rough Riders were fighting
To get Guam, Philippines, Puerto Rico

We’re becoming invincible
We’re brave, mighty, and ambitious

Now we’re needing
a better trade route
Instead of moving all around South America

Faster travel we’re attaining
using sea-level locks for sailing

WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?
WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?

Panama Canal
is finally finished
Even though mosquitoes caused diseases

Atlantic to Pacific
9 Hours to be more specific

Storms Arising- Tensions Growing
Everybody’s gonna be exploding

Alliances are forming
Protection from the enemies’ storming
Assassination from Serbia
1914 is all about disturbia

Before we know it-We’re competing
Other countries are becoming deceiving

WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?
WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?

Woodrow Wilson remaining neutral
Until the fighting gets way too brutal

Lusitania was torpedoed
By a German submarine called a U-Boat

Americans are dying
Isolationism we’re still trying

Mail to Mexico from Germany
Ganging up to be bring some harmony

Sending telegrams made us angry
Zimmerman note turned out crazy

1917 is the year
Central Powers will begin to fear

WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?
WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?

Allied Powers we are teaming
We’re tired of Germany’s scheming

Great Britain, France and Russia
Japan, Italy, Belgium, Serbia

Central Powers we’re attacking
All the soldiers have started packing

(Rest) Turkey and Germany
We’ve got Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary

WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?
WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?

New technologies are arriving
A better way to help our fighting
Machine guns, trench warfare
Submarines, poison gas- say a prayer

We are testing tanks and airplanes
Dog-fighting pilots on their A-game

In the trenches we are steady
to enter no-man’s land we are ready!

In the U.S, we are busy
To help make win the war very easy

Sending vegetables from the war gardens
To help the fighters who might be starvin’

WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?
WORLD POWER-do you know what that means?

SPOKEN:
On November 11, 1918 at 11:00AM, the Central Powers surrendered, and an armistice ended the war.

January 1919, the Treaty of Versailles officially ended the war.

Germany had to pay heavy fines and could not rebuild its army.

The League of Nations was formed to prevent future wars, but the senate did not approve.

The United States would return to isolationism.

Everyone hoped this would be the “WAR TO END ALL WARS.”

Peace and Isolation would only last for about 20 years.

Second Nine Weeks Coming to an End

Well, the fifth graders made it to and back from Barrier Island last week. We had some changes with the weather, but everyone had a great time and LEARNED A LOT!!!! We did have a whole week off from school last week because of snow, so this week we are finishing up the second nine weeks. We are in the process of completing 2nd nine weeks "Benchmark" testing. We will take Writing today, ELA tomorrow and then Science will be next Wednesday, Social Studies on Thursday and Math on Friday. Make sure you are studying through your notes a little each night. This will also help with PASS testing at the end of the year! (It will be here before we know it!)

Writing PASS is in March, so we are working a good bit with writing. This week we started with a fictional writing where the students are creating their own narratives. They are in the process of developing characters. They have had some interviews with other characters in the class to help develop their protagonist and antagonist even more! They are some very creative students.

We just wrapped up Becoming a World Power and WWI in Social Studies. The students learned a new song for that unit as well. The song will be posted in the next post, so you can enjoy it, too!
Second Nine Weeks test in Social Studies will cover the Industrial Revolution, Immigration and Reforms and Becoming a World Power and WWI. To review, the students have great notes and 3 GREAT songs to study for that!

Report cards will go home next week, so please review these with your child to see what needs to change for next semester. Middle school will be here before we know it!
